Survival is not Mandatory: Everything a CEO Needs to Know about Lean is a concise, practical guide to Lean Manufacturing--what it is, why it is critical and how to implement it in your organization. Steve Williams' book is especially valuable because it was written "from the trenches" by someone who has "been there and done that." This book is fact-filled and well-organized. The author's clear, no nonsense writing style, excellent examples and illustrations and frequent touches of humor combine to make this book an easy read in one sitting; while also serving as a valuable reference volume for years to come.

Williams has a deep background in supply chain management at Plexus Corporation, a very successful, Wisconsin-based, global EMS provider. In addition to his practical experience and proven management skills,
Williams is also a nice guy with excellent people skills. He manages his suppliers on a win-win basis to ensure the long term survival of both Plexus and its vendors.

The electronics industry that Plexus serves is highly competitive. Customer satisfaction--including on-time delivery, unerring quality and competitive pricing--is key to survival. Plexus is one of the very few large, U.S. EMS companies that has prospered while retaining substantial domestic manufacturing. Its major competitors are all "world class," yet Plexus continues to profitably gain market share by listening and responding to its customers' product needs in an efficient, timely manner.

Williams' message is sobering--your company does not have the right to survive! Global, larger and lower cost competitors stand ready to steal your greatest asset--your customers. Fortunately, Williams lays out a clear path to success--transforming your business into a lean, efficient, customer-focused organization.
