Findings from the Databeans report 2010 Microcontrollers shows recovery in worldwide microcontroller revenue from 2009 to an overall revenue exceeding $12 billion dollars in 2010. Growth is expected to reach $18.5 billion dollars by 2015.
The microcontroller market is expected to reach $12.3 billion dollars in revenue this year, up 14% from 2009. Microcontrollers, a relatively consistent components market for generating revenue, suffered a 21% lose in revenue in 2009, due in large part to the struggling economy. However, with their wide variety of uses, including automotive, computer, consumer, communications and industrial uses, microcontrollers are slated to recover this year and grow steadily to $18.5 billion dollars in 2015.
One of the main contributors to the recovery of the microcontroller market is the large consumption of microcontrollers in the automotive market. Databeans projects automotive semiconductor revenue in 2010 will grow 13%, to reach $18.5 billion. Microcontrollers constitute 23% of this market. Forecasted to escalate 18%, the automotive industry uses microcontrollers in a wide variety of applications, such as airbag control modules, body electronics, powertrain, and aftermarket products, with future growth in this market expected to increase driven by higher electronic content in safety systems, infotainment and engine and fuel systems.
Microcontroller suppliers include Renesas Electronics, Freescale Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, Microchip Technology, and Fujitsu. Renesas including newly acquired NEC was the top supplier in 2009 with an estimated combined 29% share. Freescale was number two with 10% share.
Databeans' new 2010 microcontroller report highlights all of the microcontroller industries expected gains in 2010 and into the future. The report breaks down projected gains and unit shipments and revenue by region, market segment, product type, and application. The report also breaks down geographical revenue by supplier and tracks percent of revenue share. A separate available market share study breaks out microcontroller revenue share by region as well as by end market and by product type.
